Summary: The former postmaster of Adamsville, Daniel V. Miller, who was arrested and tried in court for opening the letter from an African American soldier, was acquitted on the grounds that the letter was actually a decoy letter to see if the Postmaster would open it. He had previously been accused of opening letters and "purloining" their contents. The judge ruled that since the letter was not from an actual person, it was not a letter at all and so Miller was not guilty. Wm. Price, Esq. acted as counsel for Miller.
