From Zacharias' death announcement in the Sept. 10, 1904 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association:
"During the war he employed maggots in the treatment of hospital gangrene to remove decayed tissue, and claimed that hereby he 'saved many lives….' In 1903 he was elected commander of all the United Confederates Veterans' Camps in MD. Served as Assistant Surgeon at Shipp Hospital"
