Summary: The draft begins today in all Congressional Districts of Maryland except the Fourth. Those sub-districts that have met their quotas include Middletown, Hauvers, Liberty, Woodsboro, Mt. Pleasant, Johnsville and Jackson. Most other districts have nearly reached their quotas. Frederick District needs about 70 more volunteers.

Summary: Last Saturday, a drunken soldier fired four shots at Wm. Brown, a negro driving a cart on North Market Street. All of the shots missed their mark and Brown escaped unhurt.

A Shooting Fracas (March 15th, 1865)

Summary: Two soldiers were injured during a fracas on 6th Street, which involved one of the soldiers getting shot and the other getting knocked down; Robert Castle, a civilian, was arrested for having shot the soldier, however testimony was very conflicting and the authorities were unsure of the guilty party. As Robert Castle was leaving the office of the Provost Marshal, he was hit in the head by a rock. The Provost Guard prevented any more violence against him and took him to his home.

Brutal Assault (March 15th, 1865)

Summary: Mr. Frederick Shipley was attacked by three soldiers on the street for no just cause or provocation. The soldier who committed the assault, named Schultz, is a member of the company now on Provost duty. He was arrested by Provost Marshal Baugher. It is hoped that the Provost Marshal will institute some "stringent" measures to insure more safety for citizens on the streets of Frederick. Many people are afraid of drunken and insulting soldiers and rowdyism.
