Transcript
UNION MEETING AT MIDDLETOWN. – The Constitutional Union Meeting at Middletown, on Saturday night last, was large and respectable, and attended by many of the leading and substantial men of the district. The rain which fell in the early part of the evening, prevented a great many persons from being present, but notwithstanding, it was a good meeting, and the enthusiasm pervading the people indicated the Union and national sentiment of all. Our fellow townsman, J. Mortimer Kilgour, Esq., addressed the meeting in his happiest and most earnest style. Those who were there listened with strict attention to the noble and stirring appeals which were made for our gallant standard bearers, Bell and Everett. The Bolivar Band was on hand, and played a number of choice and brilliant pieces, which added greatly to the color of the occasion. From what we saw of the feeling manifested by the friends of the Union in that good and true town, and other information obtained from our friends there, we are satisfied the old banner district will roll up a majority unprecedented and one which will astound us all. The work is progressing and a good report may be expected from this “strong hold” of conservatism.
