A Stampede

Summary

About 30 men from the adjoining counties in Virginia passed through Middletown en route to Baltimore and some planned to enlist in the Federal army; many were married men who left their families to avoid being forced into the rebel army. Virginians report that thousands loyal to the Union are fleeing that state in every direction. Middletown offered supper to an omnibus load of about 20 men in flight.
