Second Regiment of Cavalry

Summary

First Regimental Cavalry District of Maryland comprised of two cavalry regiments. First Regiment, under Col. William Richardson, consists of all troops west of the Monocacy. Second Regiment consists of troops from Frederick City and parts of Carroll Co. Second formerly commanded by A. Kimmel. Since his promotion, Maryland Governor has appointed J. K. Longwell as Colonel, John E. Smith as Lieut. Col. and, Denton Hammond of New Market as Major, etc. Both regiments have full complement of officers.

SECOND REGIMENT OF CAVALRY. – In the First Regimental Cavalry district of Maryland, there are two Cavalry Regiments. – The First Regiment comprises of all troops west of the Monocacy, and is under the command of Col. William Richardson; the Second Regiment comprises troops in Frederick and part of Carroll counties, east of the river, and was recently command by Col. A. Kimmel. But since the promotion of Major General Kimmel, the Governor has issued commissions, bearing date the 5th __ to the following officers of the Regiment – Colonel – John R. Longwell; Lieut. Col. – John E. Smith; Maj. – Denton Hammond, New Market; Chaplain – Dr. Thos. Sim, Liberty; Adjutant – ____ G. Montgomery[?]; Quarter Master – Thomas ____, New London; Paymaster – Henry Clay Naill; Surgeon – Dr. Thomas W. Simpson; Surgeon’s ____ – Dr. Sallars Maynard, Liberty. Both regiments are now fully officered.
