Great Rejoicing
Summary
The fall of Richmond and Petersburg was joyously celebrated by Middletown citizens. Church bells were rung, flags were flown in the breeze from house windows. For the remainder of the day there was constant celebration, blowing of horns, beating of drums, etc. In other cities there was also tremendous celebration, business was essentially suspended and in some cities there were illuminations.
