Summary
Three Federal soldiers were tried for the murder of young Edward Gladfelter of York Co., PA. The murder occurred near Leitersburg. Abraham Coon and Lindsey Forney were convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to be hung. John Riley was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 18 years in the penitentiary. Gladfelter was on his way home and leading several horses on the highway when he was overtaken and arrested as a horse thief, then shot dead. His body was left on the road.
