What it Costs the People!

Summary

The expenses that the Democrat-controlled government has run up over the past year are listed. In the 1864 Maryland Constitution, the expenses for the legislators were fixed, but in 1867, this was changed to give per diem expenses as well as mileage. There were three sessions of the legislature in 1867 which increased the costs as well as amounts proposed for paying bounties, compensation to slave-holders, etc. The treasury is empty. The total amount appropriated in the last session was between $4 million and $5 million. It is costing $1,000 per day to keep the legislature in session. Figures are given for the expenses for members of the legislature from each county.
