The Election of Washington County
Summary
The Herald expresses sorrow at the loss which the Republican Union Party suffered in the election of the previous week. It lists various means the Democrats used to unfairly influence the vote including the fact that Judges of Election couldn't challenge voters and, in the districts along the Potomac River, the C&O has been a "political machine" for both parties. In the recent election, the paper feels it was manipulated by the Democratic-Rebel party and its men were compelled to vote against their "sentiments." The Republicans have battled "manfully for our principles and our candidates" but while maintaining their principles, their candidates have been defeated.
