Rebel Preparation
Summary
Editorial which discusses the claims that the governor is forming a militia with the intent of beginning a second rebellion and calls on Washington County men to oppose it. The paper deplores the current leaders of Maryland who it compares to the same kinds of men who wanted Maryland to secede in 1861. It urges men of Washington Co. to look at what Governor Swann is doing as well as the Democratic party at the local level where nominees for office are known to have been rebels. The state treasury is bankrupt. Swann has purchased cannons for the state militia out of the treasury because Gen. Grant would not give him any and has also spent huge sums on militia uniforms. The paper says, "Will you endorse these men, and such extravagance by your votes?"
