Register's Indicted
Summary
Seven men who were Gov. Swann's choices as Registers in Frederick County were indicted by the Grand Jury. Swann did not follow the law in making his selections, but "was governed by selfish motives and made such selections as would promote his own personal interests." The 7 names are: Dennis Scholl of Frederick; Joshua Ahalt of Middletown; Charles Gross (?) of Jefferson; Thomas Hammond of Liberty; Hanson T. Clemson of Johnsville; Hezekiah Boteler (?) of Petersville, and Aaron Poffinberger of Jackson. Had Swann chosen men for "loyalty, firmness, and uprightness," the Grand Jury would not have been needed.
