Enlistment of Colored Troops in MD
Summary
The U. S. War Department will shortly announce that colored troops from the states of Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri, West Virginia and Tennessee will be enlisted. Compensation of $300 per slave will be given to loyal slave owners and the slaves will be free at the end of their terms of enlistment. Disloyal slave owners will not be compensated.
