Summary
Washington County furnishes highest number of Government troops in MD, at least 1,000 "men under arms and in service." Recalls early in the war, "her brave sons of Clear Spring, Williamsport and Sharpsburg boldly repulsed the rebel marauders from the opposite side of the Potomac..." List of 4 companies in 1st Regt. Home Brigade at Frederick, Co. A, Co. B, Co. F, Co. H with officers' names; also other companies attached to other Home Brigade regiments in Cumberland and Williamsport; others in Pennsylvania Regiments "who entered the service before measure were taken here for the organization of Companies."
