Union Convention in District No. 7
Summary
The Schoolhouse in Smithsburg hosted a Union Convention to nominate District Officers; Nicholas Beard, Chairman; J. W. Barkdoll, Secretary. Jacob Hoffbine, H. W. Lyday, Jeremiah S. Besore appointed to draft governing rules which were unanimously adopted. Nominees for Magistrates, Constables, Supervisor named and voted upon. Meeting "adjourned to the square, where the people were addressed by their old fellow citizen, Daniel Witmer, Esq...admonished the people of Old Cavetown to stand by the Union no matter who be President, particularly Democrats..."
