Meeting at Clear Spring, Md.

Summary

Citizens of Clear Spring met on May 3 (1861) regarding a bill in the General Assembly that would create a Committee of Safety. Jonathan Nesbitt was made chairman; Dr. H.F. Berry, vice president; and Dr. J. Rufus Smith, secretary. Among its resolutions, the meeting expressed its opposition to the proposed Committee of Public Safety as an “arbitrary and despotic power,” and its intention to ignore the present General Assembly meeting in Frederick as “illegally convened.”
