Stampede of Negroes from Frederick
Summary
Recently eight to ten slaves escaped from Frederick County owners that included Caroline E. Brengle, Mary Hammond, John Smith, Ezra Houck, Christian Thomas, and other citizens. It is believed that the new law prohibiting manumissions, which takes affect June 1 (1860), caused the flight.
