The Meeting at Middletown
Summary
The Unconditional Union meeting at Middletown last Saturday was one of the largest political meetings ever held there. Four brass bands played music, including Mobberly’s Brass Band. Chairman Upton Buhrman introduced Horace Maynard of Tennessee who spoke in favor of the Reconstruction policies of Congress. Francis Thomas spoke next, arguing that the proposed Constitutional amendment did not propose to give the vote to negroes, but rather intends to prevent “traitors” from participating in government.
