Johnson Clubs
Summary
It is surprising that Union men are joining Johnson Clubs, which are composed of “rebels.” The rebels’ goal is to use the support of Union men to regain political power. They are trying to make people believe that the Union Party wants to elevate negroes to equality with white men. The Union Party, however, only wishes that the negroes be allowed to enjoy their freedom, that they are allowed to create their own destiny, “that they be recognized as human beings and not as brutes,” and that they have the right to their own wives and children.
