Rebel Meeting
Summary
A meeting of the Johnson Club took place Tuesday evening at the Court House, which was an attempt to “disrupt the Union Party” and help the “rebels” obtain political power. Of the two hundred in attendance, about one hundred fifty were former Confederates and sympathizers. Speeches were delivered by Union men who gave the “rebel audience” very little to cheer about. Afterward, many Union men stated that they intended to withdraw from the club, not liking the company in which they found themselves.
