NEGROES IN UNIFORM – The popular practice of permitting others’ colored servants and negro camp followers to wear the uniform of United States ____ put a stop to very ____. The Provost Marshals of Washington and Baltimore ___, and should be immediately concerned everywhere. These negro servants are not enlisted to fight the battles of the Union; nor are they upon all equality[?] with the patriotic volunteers, who, wear the uniform of the Army. The practice cannot fail to be demoralizing to the soldiers, as it is corrupting to the servants in private families. We would also remark that the laws of the State prohibit negroes from carrying or having fire-arms, nevertheless, we are told, that the negro army servants occasionally wear pistols in our streets. Now, as there is abundant _____ with the State laws, we call on these whom ____ concern to see that negroes die ____ from wearing pistols of other state[?] arms.
