Carroll County Commissioners N/A, minutes

June 29, 1863

"N. B. at this time being about 4 O’Clock P.M. it was announced that the rebels were coming into
the town – all business suspended.
Subsequent facts proved the above report to be true. The advance of Steuarts [sic] rebel cavalry
came into the town about that time; a skirmish took place between them and a small cavalry
force which arrived here the day previous, in which two of Steuarts [sic] men were killed and
two wounded; as also two were killed and two wounded on the Federal side. The confederates
marched through the town during the night in the direction of Littlestown P.a. [sic] and next
morning the advance of the union Army came into the town.
