Catherine Susannah Thomas Markell, diary

December 19, 1862

“About 10 o’clock P.M. whilst gazing on my dear husband’s picture, I heard footsteps, followed by a pull at the wire in yard and a ring of the doorbell... I went to the back hall door and there he stood, my beloved one. Thank Heaven he has returned safe and sound. Did not let any one but the boys know of his arrival.”
