Catherine Susannah Thomas Markell, diary

June 27, 1862

“Mrs. Blackford and Miss Julia Grove went with us to Dixie.... Miss Ella Harper gave me a Virginia button just as we were about stepping into the boat. Jacob Grove hurrahed for Jeff Davis and fired a pistol in the middle of the river---the girls all carried tiny pistols to practice target firing and they returned the salute from Virginia shore.”
