Catherine Susannah Thomas Markell, diary

July 22, 1861

“Fred returned from Virginia today.... He heard the cannon from the battle of Bull Run.... They forded the Potomac at Noland’s Ferry and both horses swam and they were obliged to get on the seat as the buggy floated. A rebel soldier of Ashby’s command drove over from the island. The rebels returned the fire of the federal troops on the Maryland side.”
