Catherine Susannah Thomas Markell, diary
September 8, 1862
“Mrs. Douglas and Robert came today. General William Barksdale of Mississippi and staff dined
with us. Sent fruit to General Jubal Early by his brother Captain Early---some fine pears and large plums and grapes---he bought a red bandana kerchief and tied them up in it. All the girls here handing fruit around among the crowds in store. Henry Douglas cleared yard and garden and placed guards around to keep off the crowd. General Barksdale advised Fred to close store
and admit buyers in squads of 10 or 12 at a time.
General McLaws and staff General Kershaw and staff took tea with us, some 20 officers and many girls here until midnight. Mrs. [A.B.] Hanson sent us a large basket of provisions, as the stores are held by troops and we could get none. General Barksdale secured a pass and Henry went with Jack and Billy out to Brunner’s Mill for flour, butter, etc. Our house so brilliantly illuminated at night and horses in charge of orderlies stood 3 deep, the length of the square. Captain Green of North Caroline, Captain Drish, Major Kennedy, Major McIntosh of South Carolina here also. Martha O’Leary gave her pretty gold necklace to Captain Green in exchange for his sleeve buttons. She never saw him again.”
