Catherine Susannah Thomas Markell, diary

May 29, 1861

“Early this morning Ben Brown and wife in a buggy, Raymond, Salie and Annie Reich in their carriage, Isaac, Sophia and Hannah Reich with Miss Holland in a two horse carriage, William, Phoebe and Rachel Delashmutt, ditto, Augustus and Laura Boteler in a buggy, J. Mortimer Kilgour and Annie R. Fout in buggy, Mr. Frank Knott, wife Helen and Lucy Boteler in carriage, Mr. Adams, Mrs. Heard and the Misses Schleigh in Sinn’s hack with the cakes and baskets, Fred, my boys and I in our carriage, and Columbus Knott on horseback, started for Harper’s Ferry. A Mr. Parr from Ripley, refused to let us cross the bridge until assured by one of Colonel Falkner’s men that all was right; we gave him cigars and cakes. Met Colonel Falkner...dined with him, Lieutenant Colonel Boone, Parson Gray and other officers.... Mr. Kilgour, with a few appropriate remarks, presented to Colonel Falkner, for the Frederick ladies, two immense, handsomely iced pound cakes and a bushel of fine strawberries.... Loud cheers and huzzas were given for the Maryland ladies as the cakes were carried away.... Nearly all the officers received bouquets from the girls. Mrs. Knott gave them several pounds of fresh butter, ginger snaps and light bread.”
